Hey There!

It's been awhile since I've got my blog on... but I'm back!!

Spring semester is in full swing and I am really enjoying it-- mainly because all of my classes relate to my major. (Let's just say I'm spending a lot of time up in the mass comm. department & Flora Frick is my home right now!) I'm working on lots of projects, so it's a lot more time consuming than just studying for a test or two, but I really like not having to sit through all lecture classes and actually getting to work in my major and within my interests. Makes me feel all grown up, and daydream about having a real job sometime soon! (hopefully not too soon though, I love school!)

Next blog I promise I'll have lots to say, this is just a quick update!

New Favorite Things

I've recently developed new favorite things.

Working out. Whenever I have time, I love going to the wellness center. Mind you, this is not an old habit... I used to have to really push myself to go. But, now I actually enjoy going!
Breakfast. When I was younger, it didn't matter if I ate breakfast or not, no biggie. Plus, I usually never had time for breakfast-- 5 extra minutes of sleep is worth it! Now, I will make time to eat some cereal, eggo waffles, even a granola bar before I walk out the door. About time!
Fruit Snacks. I think my appetite is going back to kindergarten, because all I want for a quick snack now is fruit snacks, (or applesauce) and a juice box. College obviously doesn't equal maturity.
TV online. I never have time to watch any of my favorite shows when they actually air, so now it's awesome to be able to watch them online a couple of days later-- and still stay on track with the plot.
Christmas! In the years past, I don't think I've ever felt so motivated to decorate for Christmas. But, now that we have our own place, you can bet my apartment already looks like Christmas puked on it. :-)

I've been music FILLED lately. Besides jamming out in my car...

On Halloween- I went to a really good concert, Taking Back Sunday.

Then, the next Tuesday, I went to another concert, Flo Rida & Chingy.

I love that Fargo/Moorhead has been getting good concerts lately-- this way I don't have to drive down to the cities to see good shows!

hmmm... nothing much else is new... enjoying the nice weather and NO snow we have right now!

Fall Breather

This is our first full week back after fall breather, the fabulous little break we had just last Monday and Tuesday.
I Made my break quite exciting...

--I went to the cities on Thursday night to see Bo Burnham at Fine Line Music Cafe in Downtown Minneapolis, Bo's a hilarious comedian, & lot taller in person. Yikes.
-- I also stayed with my friends who go to St. Bens. Campus was DESERTED too because they were having fall break also.

Then, I drove back Friday, and just relaxed. Saturday I was going to go to a concert, but instead I just caught up with some high school friends and relaxed. Sunday, I made a roadtrip to Watertown, SD to visit my good friend (and old roommate) Carly & her family while she was home for fall breather. EVERYONE in her family called me Nugget. Including her mom and her two nieces. It was a blast.

Monday and Tuesday were spent doing homework, and catching up on sleep, which is always a good plan.

Mission Statement

I'm a leadership minor, and last week I had to present my life "Mission Statement." I've never ever thought of having a mission statement, or at least something put into words as to how I want to live my life. But, I found someone else's words to live by... thought I'd share them here:

ATTITUDE by: Charles Swindoll

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

I'm going to live by this, Ideally.

Homecoming was last weekend, and the excitement was something you can't beat! Unfortunately, now everything is done and there's a little bit of a slow time on campus-- just enough time for me to catch up on my homework! :-)

Why am I a Dragon?

We're off to a new school year- so far for me it's been going well! Keeping busy with classes and work, but right now I get a chance to have some fun & relax because this week happens to be...

HOMECOMING!

That Dragon above blows fire at some point during Homecoming week!

I've always wondered... Why are we called Dragons?!
Well, I did some research, and this is what I found out:

MSU Moorhead's Dragon was born in the fire that devastated Old Main, the school's central building, on Feb. 9, 1930. Legend has it that Flora Frick, a physical education professor at the time, came up with the school mascot when she saw the football team running out of a temporary dressing room below the campus heating plant. It was a cold morning, and when she saw the frosty exhalations of a serpentine line of stampeding football players, she exclaimed: "They look just like dragons!" The school adopted the Dragon the following spring by a vote of the student body. -- click HERE to see where I found this out!

Then, I was thinking about why I'm a Dragon.
That's one question I definitely know the answer to.
Here's my list:

I LOVE Fargo-Moorhead. The size is right, it's perfect for me- I'm from here originally so it's definitely the spot I call home.
Campus is the perfect size- I love that everything is in a square and lots of it is connected. Minnesota winter means you wanna stay warm inside!
A Dragon is a much more fierce mascot- my high school's mascot was a Spud. Yeah, like a potato.
My parent's work here, and my aunt and uncle-- It's quite a family affair!
Campus life is awesome. There are tons of opportunities to get involved and it definitely makes it your home.
My Major- mass communications is a really great department on campus. Many professors that have real world experience and they are easy to get to know and are available to help you out with your education.
I'd be lying if I didn't mention the cost- a small school with a small-ish price? Can't beat that!

I could go on forever, but I'll spare you!

Summertime @ MSUM

It's summer- and you know what that means- MSUM is a quiet(er) place.

I've been taking a couple of classes and working on campus- and it's almost eerie how quiet some places on campus can be in between sessions of class. It's almost like a different place! Tours have a different feeling- maybe because you don't have to weave through the throngs of current students when classes change. But, I could get used to that!

I can't wait until all of my friends get back to school in the fall- it'll be different, but I'm excited to see familiar faces again and catch up with everyone. It'll be weird to not be living with all of them in the same place again, but we just keep on growing up!

It's so close to summer!! I'm excited for classes to be done...
but I don't wanna move out, not one bit.

First of all, i have WAYYYY too much stuff to move out.
Second, my roommate. i will miss my carly wayyyy too much.
Third, i'm used to living with a ton of girls. -sharing a bathroom, leaving your door open, borrowing things from friends... and i'm going to miss every little piece of living with them... even the 3:30 am burned popcorn fire alarms.

How many weeks til finals?

Despite the gorgeous weather, I completely feel in a slump right now. Finals are close, but not close enough to start studying or worrying about them. I have a few projects coming due soon... but not soon enough to worry about them. I'm at the pinnacle of "lazy student" right now, but I'm enjoying it! Our residence hall room is clean, we've been spending time outside, I've been working out, just living the dream.

It's crazy to think that my freshman year of school will be done soon! where has the time gone? I remember the first few weeks on campus, I felt so out of my element, but now I can't imagine what next year will be like for me since I'm not living on campus.

My current home.... I'll miss her!

FYI---The apartment hunt is still on!

Back on campus now. I missed being on campus a lot. WHY am I going to live off campus next year?! I must be crazy.

On another note... I get to apartment shop next week! We're looking at a building and hopefully if everything goes good, we'll be able to move in sometime in June, July, or August. :-D

One more thing I have to talk about... Over break... all I did was watch The Office. I'm obsessed now!!

I've Survived!! (So Far...)

Well, due to the GREAT FLOOD of '09... I'm on my third week of spring break... kinda.

Spring break was March 16-20th, then we all came back to school, expecting to start class up again Monday the 23rd. But, they cancelled classes Monday, encouraging students to go out and sandbag to help homes in south Moorhead along the river. Nemzek was a volunteer center for sandbagging in Moorhead, and so it was convenient to walk right across the parking lot and hop on a "Sandbag Xprs" city bus that dropped volunteers off in neighborhoods all around Moorhead that were near the river and in danger.

Monday, I went out to sandbag with a bunch of girls from my floor in the Dahl hall, and we had a lot of fun! We were on Rivershore Drive, and it was crazy how close so many of the homes were to the river. Monday night, we found out we were closing Tuesday, and that night the National Guard moved into Holmquist Hall to stay and help with the flood effort. Tuesday I was also out sandbagging in North Moorhead. Wednesday, we got A TON of snow... and so campus was closed again due to weather. Wednesday I was out sandbagging again in South Moorhead, but the snow was difficult to deal with... you had to wear a ton of layers and carry bags! Also on Wednesday, we were informed that the crest for the river had risen to 42', so they wanted to raise the dikes to 43' in most locations. Basically, Wednesday was a day to build the dikes higher and hope for the best. By Thursday, I was WAY sore, so I didn't go out until later in the night, but we ended up going to make sandbags at MSCTC in Moorhead.

Then, Friday morning they evacuated the residence halls so that they could shut of the sewer and water so that the city had more resources, and I've been staying at home ever since, and losing my mind! I'd much rather be busy.

I'm missing school now... 3 weeks is a long time for me to get out of the groove of things!

Anyhow, that's a SHORT update of the last few weeks,

SNOW!

That's what the weather looked like yesterday and this morning. So... we got a snow day on Tuesday! It was wonderful, I slept in really late, and vegged out basically all day with my roommate and friends. We watched lots of movies, and even ordered a pizza-- surprisingly Pizza Patrol delivered to us in the no-travel advisory! Then, today, we started at 10:00 since the roads weren't plowed yet, (and they're still not plowed all the way at this point...)

Since my parents left for Florida today... (they made it out of the airport!) My cousin and I went to go check on my dog and cat, and we got her car stuck TWICE in my neighborhood. I wish that the roads were more plowed! So, it'll be an experience when I try to go check on the pets later.

This week...

Hey all!
Well, since last blog I wrote about almost nothing, I decided that this blog I'd write about something cool... but I really am lacking ideas on what to write about. SO, I suppose I could just give a summary of the week so far.

This week, My friends who go to school at CSB-SJU are on spring break (SO Early!) so they're all back in town. My friend Lauren stayed over at the dorms Sunday night and we had a good time catching up, and I got a chance to introduce her to all of the cool (and crazy) people I live and hang out with. She stayed in my room most of Monday too, so she got to experience firsthand "A Day in the Life of Lacey," as I like to call it. She ate at Kise, hung out in the CMU, and got to hang out with my roommate while she was here. I had a lot of fun! She sounded like she did too... it made all of my stories come together once she knew the places I was talking about and the people I was with.

This is My Home!

Spring break is so close, I can feel it! I'm actually not doing anything really exicting... I'm cat & dog sitting while my parents go to Florida. It'll just be nice to give my brain a break for awhile.

I'm starting to sign up for summer classes on campus. The really nice thing about summer classes at MSUM is that I'm planning to take one online, so I can do it whenever I'm free, and the other class I'm taking is Monday-Friday from 10:45-2:15, and it only lasts for 3 weeks. It'll be nice to put 6 credits away so that I don't have to do them later!

Anyways, that's the only thing I've really done that's exciting. Just getting scholarship applications and a few other job and organization applications in too!

So, I was talking with my friend/coworker Jason today about how I get to blog for admissions. AND... he wanted me to feature him in my post this week. Also, he wanted me to tell you that he's really cool, and he goes to MSUM. AND he loves it here. (and I mean really.... anyone who dresses up like a taco for Halloween is pretty sweet.)

Computer is FIXED!!

Yep, that's right, my computer is back-- new hard drive and all!

So, my computer was acting fishy last night.
I took it to Best Buy Geek Squad to see what they could do.
Turns out it'll take 5 days and about $300 dollars.

MSUM Text Messages!

YAY!! I'm so excited that we're now texting prospective students on their interest level!

This means that I won't have to call people who hang up on me, and that we can focus on students who are way more interested, and we don't have to bother those who are not interested.

Besides, texting is the present and future-- who knows if we'll even have to do calling anymore!

Anyhow, I'm really excited.

Otherwise, this week has been pretty boring, I took a midterm in astronomy... not so bad, we'll see once I get the grade.

Tomorrow night, I'm going to the Vagina Monologues I think... I'll let you know how it is next week if I go!

POST SECRET!

I'm so excited! Forever I have loved the PostSecret books by Frank Warren, and I've read his blog etc. etc., and now in our residence halls we have a PostSecret wall! I've been thinking of ideas for days, however I just don't think I'm a very secretive person-- I think I wear my heart on my sleeve. But, still, it's fun to have a wall to post funny, random, cute things when you're procrastinating your homework.

Besides that, everything else is the same-old-same-old. I've started a snail-mail plan with my really good friend Lauren who goes to school at St. Bens by St. Cloud, Minn. We're going to start writing each other letters once a week, or at least sending coloring book pages, haha. It's going to be really funny in the next few weeks.

"I hate crossing a river to get to Kise!"

Last Friday, we were fortunate enough (ha!) to have a water main break on 14th street- the street that cuts campus in half between the CMU and the residence halls. On Fridays i don't have class so i slept in and got up around 11 to eat lunch in Kise. Well, we made it to Kise just fine, but once we were heading out to cross 14th street, we realized a TON of water flooding it. We decided that instead of wading through that cold water, we would walk down a block to get across the street back to our rooms. Wow, it seemed so much colder having to walk that extra block!

By the time i was ready to head to my tour, campus workers had fashioned a bridge out of pallets so that you could at least cross the street to get to the main campus. Also by that point, at lot of the water had started to freeze so it was slush. It was really embarrassing to have to make my tour group cross a bridge of pallets to see the show room in Snarr Hall.

Now, it's completely solid so it's easier to cross-- it's just really icy like a skating rink.
Looks like they're working to make it better though-- every time i walk across the street less ice is there.

I LOVE 3-Day Weekends!

So far, the week has been going smoothly, and I think it helped that we had a 4 day weekend. YAY MLK Day!

Today, I had my very first Astronomy Lab, which I was so nervous about... but it ended up going really good, and I think I'm really going to like my Astronomy class now.

Yesterday, it was the inauguration of President Barack Obama. It was really cool to watch history being made, regardless of what your thoughts are about it.

Nothing else has really happened... It's been a slow week!

Residence Halls?!

Last week, I talked to an incoming freshman coming to campus and she asked me, "What do you think about living in the dorms? Do you have to? Do you like it?" and, I thought I should blog my thoughts about Residence Halls.

Do you have to live in the dorms?
You're not required to live in the dorms, but it's RECOMMENDED. This way, you get to know campus a little bit better, you meet a lot of new people, you are exposed to many different events going on on campus, and you get acclimated to college life.

What do I think about living in the dorms?
Being from Moorhead, I decided to live in the dorms instead of living at home, mostly just to meet more people and to be closer to campus. I haven't regretted living in the dorms since I've moved in. I love having people around me all the time-- during Christmas break it was hard being home and not surrounded by people! I get along really well with my roommate (I actually found out who she was and got to meet her in April!). Although it's quite a bit different than living at home (wearing flip flops in the shower, quiet hours, locking the door every time you leave), I'm really glad I decided to stay on campus. Everything is so close, I never have to worry about my car not starting in the dead of winter, or leaving early to make it to class on time. Also, during orientation week, there were so many events to attend, and that's where I ended up meeting a lot of people that I otherwise probably would have never met.

Do you like it?
I LOVE IT!! Although at times I miss having my own space, I think living in a residence hall is a really rewarding experience, and it teaches you a lot of responsibility.

My Advice: Try the dorms, even if it's just for the first semester of your education. I think it's worth it. :-)

Second Semester Started!

Well as my title says, second semester is well underway, and it's going pretty well so far. This semester I'll actually be taking classes in my major (Mass Communications) so it'll be interesting to get some experience for the future. However, as excited as I am to take these classes, I'm not excited about leaving my bed and walking in this painfully cold weather to Bridges or Hagen Hall! Seriously, it had to get this cold as soon as school started up right?! And with it being so cold, my phobia of falling on a patch of ice in front of a lot of people is on high guard. Oh well, I guess I'll just try to remember that I live in Minnesota.

Christmas break was good! After finals, it was nice to give my brain a break and relax at home with my family (who missed me greatly I'm sure :-) ) and not think about school for awhile. It was also really great to see my high school friends and catch up with them, and talk to them in person instead of through a text message or email! But, once the Christmas and New Years excitement was over, I was ready to move back into my dorm and see my roommate Carly-- they never tell you that living in the dorms can actually be FUN and that you'll miss the people who become your new family at school!

Well, that's all for now, or else this will become my new form of procrastination aside from Facebook (and that for sure could be bad!)
